Graceless assholes

So the World Cup starts in June?

Yankees apologize to fans for missing WBC stars

TAMPA, Fla. -- Even before a pitch was thrown Saturday, the New York Yankees apologized to their fans.

The Yankees displayed a sign by the customer service booth on the main concourse, explaining it wasn't their fault Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Bernie Williams had departed for the World Baseball Classic.

"Thank you for expressing your concerns," the sign stated. "We are sorry that certain players will not be present for portions of spring training. These players have elected to participate in the World Baseball Classic. The World Baseball Classic is an event sanctioned by the commissioner of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association. The New York Yankees did not vote to support this event. Any comments you have regarding the World Baseball Classic should be directed to the commissioner of Major League Baseball or the Major League Baseball Players Association."

Another sporting event no one gives a shit about.

This is a total clusterfuck, it comes during spring training, the MLB owners were allowed to pull players, and there was opposition from the start.

Selig did this to compete with soccer, because baseball is losing ground everywhere including in Japan and Cuba. The J League has exploded with interests and the Cubans are moving towards training soccer players to be less tied to the US.

But the way they did it was a joke.

First, in soccer, to be an international is to be part of the elite of the sport. Beckham, Henry, Zindane, Ronaldo, the stars of the sport are proud to represent their country. No club would ever act as graceless as the Yankees just did. If they did, FIFA would fine the shit out of them.

Since the WBC is artificial, no one explained that to most baseball players.

Second, the level of competition isn't anything like even.

Third, the games have been poorly promoted and are seen basically as pointless.

This could have worked, but no one outside Selig's office cares either way.

Oh yeah, fuck the fuckin' Yankees
