It ain't about values
Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda
Entering the values debate over what Hollywood produces is a lose-lose situation and it amazes me so many people are willing to fall for it.
For people who think my tagging Amy Sullivan's argument as fundamentally anti-Semitic is wrong (not that she is one or believes her argument is), is comments like this:
WILLIAM DONAHUE, PRESIDENT, CATHOLIC LEAGUE: I spoke to Mel a couple of weeks ago about this. And I don‘t think it really matters a whole lot to him. It certainly doesn‘t matter to me. We‘ve already won.
Who really cares what Hollywood thinks? All these hacks come out there. Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It‘s not a secret, OK? And I‘m not afraid to say it. That‘s why they hate this movie. It‘s about Jesus Christ, and it‘s about truth. It‘s about the messiah.
Hollywood likes anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes. I like families. I like children. They like abortions. I believe in traditional values and restraint. They believe in libertinism. We have nothing in common. But you know what? The culture war has been ongoing for a long time. Their side has lost.
You have got secular Jews. You have got embittered ex-Catholics, including a lot of ex-Catholic priests who hate the Catholic Church, wacko Protestants in the same group, and these people are in the margins. Frankly, Michael Moore represents a cult movie. Mel Gibson represents the mainstream of America.
DONAHUE: Oh, my, where do you begin?
Look, I like the rabbi when it comes to the culture wars. He‘s pretty good. But the hypersensitivity here to try and censor Christians who have a problem with secularists—and when it comes to many parts of the country, he‘s right. There are secularists from every ethnic and religious stock. But when you talk about Hollywood, again, let‘s face it. You‘re talking mostly about secular Jews.
Now he's not saying this in some Klan meeting, but on TV and denying it's anti-Semitic nature.,
When you say you want to boycott this, or ask Hollywood about that, you're walking arm in arm with Donahue, and his anti-Semitic rantings. After all, doesn't "cultural elite" fit right in to what he is saying?
Not only that, you're fighting on the other guy's ground. Because they have rigged the argument.
They don't care about America's Army, where you kill terrorists, but they hate GTA because you kill cops. Killing itself is not the issue, just who dies. When liberals bite into this argument, they think it's about humanist values, and it sure as fuck is not. They want games which don't rely on violence. Which isn't what the conservatives want. If GTA was about killing gangbangers, especially black gangbangers, not a word would be said. What Sullivan misses is that this argument isn't about "values" like negotiation over violence, but the triumph of Christianity over all other ideologies.
The right only cares about misogyny when it comes from black artists. You don't see anyone bitching about country and it's messages. Only when the Dixie Chicks had political opinions were they treated like pariahs. This is not an argument of equals. It's a campaign strategy to drive dems away from their most loyal supporters, Hollywood. It's not that complicated. It's part of their grand strategy of defunding the left. Why not set liberals in a bipartisan coalition to censor Hollywood? What happens? Hollywood stops funding the pols who attacked them.
This isn't to say that a lot of Hollywood puts out crap. But it wasn't liberals who made Rambo or Red Dawn. It wasn't liberals who shoved country misogyny into homes across America or the dangers of NASCAR. But the way to do it NOT to embrace a false argument about "values" created by the opposition to attack our supporters. The Gropenator wasn't making liberal films, was he? His violent epics were staunchly Republican.
If you want to talk about humanistic values, fine, but this isn't that debate or anything close to it. It's about the Jews, the filth they shove into your homes and how icky it is. Unless Bill Donahue was saying something else. He wasn't isolated for his comments, he wasn't banned from TV. No one called him on his bigoted remarks.
So when they start striking up the band for this, I don't see why people bite on this.
Democrats will never satisfy the people who vote on this issue, because the people who vote on this issue have an agenda which is not about "values", but a Christian dominionist state. Controlling the media is just one aspect of this. And it reeks of anti-semitism.
This is nothing new, Hitler had his degenerated art, Stalin his cosmopolitans, both were code words for Jews. What they wanted to do is cast the Jews as opposed to the values of the wider society. They were undermining the wholesome values of the state with perverse ideas. One of the Nazi's main propaganda themes was to show Jews as attacking children. Notice how Donahue crafts his argument, that Hollywood Jews are degenerates who oppose the mainstream of modern American life.
It isn't that values don't matter, but Sullivan falls into the trap of agreeing that their argument is right and not looking at what lies underneath. They don't care about video games per se, but using that as a shield. They mean what they say about Hollywood and Christian values and Jews. It';s not a new argument or an unfamiliar one. Trying to use it will only trap you because no matter what you agree to, it will never, ever be enough.
