Leave already, you gutless bastards

Bush scares me, I'm going to canada

I'm sick at the protestations of rank cowardice from some people on the left. Oh, I'm going to go to Canada, I'm going to Europe, I'm going to join the Greens.

Oh, fuck all of you, you gutless fucks. You're all fucking cowards and we would be well to be rid of you. Go sit in some London pub or Amsterdam brown bar or Swedish sauna and whine to your European friends who will snicker behind your backs at your gutlessness. You're moral cowards, and about to be physical cowards as well. Go live out your exile fantasies and be done with it. Enough of your mewling. Start combing the British or Canadian version of Craig's List, have your apartment sales and go. Just fucking go and be done with it. Send a post card or an e-mail to let us know how you're getting along.

But for God's sake, stop trying to justify the yellow stripe down your back. Your convictions are as deep as a face peel. I don't care about your excuses, they're excuses, and you can stop making them. We know you're cowards unable to do anything but whine and moan about how America sucks. So go on, leave. Go hide from evil Bush and take the easy way out. See ya, and don't let the door hit you on the ass.

As far as the Green party goes? Waste of time. At least as it's run today. First, at least you want to fight. That's a good thing. But the Greens need to grow up and build a party. And I'm for that to a degree. But to run to the Greens as a way to spite the Dems is also moral cowardice.

There are two functioning parties in America. The Greens are not going to change one fucking thing in this country as long as the GOP is in charge. They aren't going to be elected to anything important, they aren't going to write bills, they aren't going to help one constitutent.

You have to realize that the Greens serve only to fracture the left. Two left parties means split votes. It will also mean a Republican victory in many cases. Too many Green candidates live in lala land, advocating positions which are just untenable for most Americans. Like pro-henp policies. Come on, that's not going to fly. Or the spoiled bratism of Nader and his politics as fashion statement. In many cases, the Greens could serve as a viable third party in local and state races, but in federal races, they help the GOP more than hurt it.

Realism is not fun, hard choices are not fun. And while overturning the system has a certain sexy appeal, it rarely happens and when it does, the consequences are often nothing like we expect. The real work is done inside the system, and reforming what you can and challenging what you can't. The Greens are as much an ananchronism as liberal Republicans, because they are largely a white, upper middle class party and that is not where new America is. New America is brown and working class. Any party which is upper middle class and white and claiming to be liberal is well, less than it seems.

The problem is that the Greens have no sense that not only are their ideas not popular, but that they explain them poorly. Also, too many decisions in the Greens are made by committee. There is definitely a thing as too much democracy. They don't even offer a true alternative to the Democratic Party ideologically. Just as a temper tantrum. Oh, the Dems support the war, that's it, I'm a Green. So exactly which Green Congressman is going to be questioning the DOD over Iraq?

This is not the time to walk away. This is the time to fight the Democratic old guard and get people in there who have new ideas and a real vision on the future of this country. Because they are the people who are going to be elected. Not the Greens. There isn't going to be IRV, there isn't going to be federal funding of campaigns. Not as long as the GOP runs Congress. The Greens are a luxury we cannot afford now. We need a working Democratic party which can beat back the GOP. The people who run to the Greens are cowards shirking a hard, unpleasant fight. They are saying their personal satisfaction is more important than making real change. Their personal politics have to be satisfied more than making sure government works for everyone. Their selfish goals matter more than concrete success.

This is an old argument in Black America. But what happens is that people realize that it's easier to control the local Democratic Party than start from scratch.

Nothing in life is easy. Changing the Democratic Party will take more than one or two elections. If you don't have the stomach for the fight, say so and go about your business. Stop with the whining and excuses and be about your way. As Shakespeare put it:

Henry V

Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us

Simply put, if you don't want to fight, here and now, be gone with you and be quick about it. All of us staying to fight have no more time to deal with you.
